The Smith & Wesson Model 460 XVR is S&W’s flagship big-bore hunting and sport revolver, chambered in the ferocious 460 S&W Magnum and built on the massive stainless steel X-Frame. This 5″ barreled configuration wears a satin stainless finish across the frame, barrel, and 5-round cylinder, paired with black finger-grooved grips and a red-ramp front sight matched to an adjustable rear sight. Two rear sight leaves ship with the revolver so the shooter can configure a sight picture suited to the task at hand.
At the heart of the XVR is a true double-action/single-action mechanism with an exposed hammer driving the 5-shot cylinder. The 5″ barrel features S&W’s signature gain-twist rifling, which increases twist rate down the bore to stabilize heavy magnum projectiles and push velocities well beyond what a conventional rifling profile can deliver. The cylinder is cut for .460 S&W Magnum and is rated to safely fire .454 Casull and .45 Colt cartridges as well, giving shooters and hunters access to a wide spectrum of factory and handloaded ammunition – from mild .45 Colt target loads to full-house 460 S&W Magnum hunting rounds.
For recoil management with full-power 460 S&W Magnum loads, this Model 460 XVR is shipped with two interchangeable muzzle brakes/compensators that thread onto the barrel to tame muzzle flip and felt blast. The package weighs in at 60.70 oz empty, measures 11.30″ overall, and rides on the X-Large X-Frame platform that S&W reserves for its most powerful handguns.
